Within the series, there are "Patronus'". This images are often of wizards or witches after they die, and then become this image. They can also be created by using a spell. The "Patronus" is a very difficult spell and is used for primary protection. We do not see many characters ability to produce a patronus during the series, but we do however see Snape's. Therefore, further suggesting his significance in protecting and saving others.
